Summary:

It has been well established that osteointegration of a dental implant is one of the fundamental components for successful implant therapy. A vital portion of this process is ascertainment of the appropriate prosthetic tooth position from which the ideal dental implant position is dictated within the alveolar bone. I It is equally imperative that prosthetically gUided implant positioning be accomplished for predictable attainment of functional, aesthetic, and hygienically maintainable restorative outcomes. Another equally important component is the capture of the intraoral three-dimensional position of the dental implant fixtures, the associated peri-implant tissues, and the exact transfer of this informa tion to the laboratory model. This is particularly critical when fabricating a superstructure or fixed partial framework costing " This is also important when fabricating on implant-supported fixed partial denture (FPDl, since any inaccuracies in the transfer of information from the patient to the laboratory can lead to the fabrication of a non passive fitted costing and/or a costing that rocks when secured 5 Either of the aforementioned conditions will result in noncompressional forces that will be detrimental to the long-term success of the prosthesis.

The Socket-Shield Technique: First Histological, Clinical, and Volumetrical Observations after Separation of the Buccal Tooth Segment – A Pilot Study
The “socket-shield technique” has shown its potential in preserving buccal tissues. However, front teeth often have to be extracted due to vertical fractures in buccolingual direction. It has not yet been investigated if the socket-shield technique can only be used with intact roots or also works with a modified shield design referring to vertical fracture lines. The aim of this study was to assess histologically, clinically, and volumetrically the effect of separating the remaining buccal root segment in two pieces before immediate implant placement.

Bone Augmentation vs Short Implants: Making Clinical Decisions for Tooth Replacement at Sites with Alveolar Ridge Atrophy
There is often some degree of atrophy in sites planned for implant placement. An array of therapeutic options is available for implant placement in sites with vertical atrophy of the alveolar ridge, including ridge augmentation, sinus augmentation in the maxilla, nerve repositioning in the mandible and tilted implants. Short implants have been systematically evaluated as an alternative in sites with vertical alveolar ridge atrophy with favorable clinical outcomes comparable to standard-length implants. Decision making for selection of appropriate therapeutic modality for sites with vertical alveolar ridge atrophy has to consider many theoretical, surgical and prosthetic considerations. Surgical and prosthetic guidelines will be provided for application of short implants for posterior sites with limited vertical height.
