The Future of Lasers in Periodontal Therapy: Science, Hype or Snake Oil.

Description:
Substantial controversy continues to surround the use of lasers in periodontal therapy. The results of recent research studies suggest that lasers provide a viable alternative to traditional periodontal surgery. Properly applied, lasers produce less bleeding, swelling and discomfort. They treat the cause of periodontal disease rather than the effects, by specifically targeting identifiable periodontal pathogens. Regeneration of periodontal tissues is the gold standard by which we measure treatment effectiveness. Evidence is emerging that lasers provide an enhanced method for achieving this elusive goal, while eliminating many of the negative sequale associated with conventional pocket elimination surgery.

Dr,Very nice presentation.Lots of information gathered. In cases of moderate to advanced bone loss, after laser therapy, is it necessary to splint them all to prevent any micro motion? Thanks.

Dr. Brown, thank you for your excellent presentation. This has indeed been a controversial subject but the progress has been indisputable.

Absolutely great presentation about the potential use of Lasers in Periodontal Treatment. Well put together on a very controversial subject. Thanks Dr. Salama

Steve, really a pertinent presentation - Thanks! The cases around implants are most effective demonstrations of the versatility of the modality - as are some of the single unit teeth that otherwise were destined for extraction - a most valid alterntive in many situations

LANAP is definitely a potent tool. It is also definitely evolving from its early days, as science and clinical experience help refine it. Unfortunately, we didn't get the detail we typically expect from the lecturers at Dental XP. Can you be more specific about the regeneration procedure used for the last implant case you showed before-after xrays of ... how it differs from the typical LANAP (what do you sue instead of the metal piezo scaler tip, any chemotherapeutic agents?, etc.? Thank you

Laurent Rosemblaum - (8/4/2012 7:42 AM)

nice presentation. can you give us some tips about the treatment frequency (do you perform it once a week ,a month).the number of "laser shoots " in the pocket at each sequence,do you use h2o2 in the pocket,do you perform it under anesthesia? Thank you

Maurice Salama - (7/30/2012 9:30 AM)

Well done overview of Preriodontal Therapy and options for care. The utilization of laser wenergy in Periodontal Therapy was well explained as to it's effect on bacteria in the periodontal pocket and regeneration.
Thanks Dr. Salama

Excellent lecture. The philosophical quotes were good. Nice to pay homage to the people that influenced your life.

Edward Kusek - (7/29/2012 5:43 PM)

How many of theses lectures are you going to do on LANAP or is it advertisement. Every lecturer for LANAP has the same slides of healing pockets

Emerging Perspectives in Soft Tissue Augmentation: Evolving Tools, Techniques & Materials
Soft tissue root coverage microsurgery and pontic site enhancement are frequently utilized periodontal plastic surgery techniques to create an ideal restorative frame for teeth, pontics and implants. Tunnel, Semilunar, VISTA etc. are among the new age techniques highlighted in this growing area of periodontal microsurgery. New autologous tissue harvest techniques, Allograft ACDM and Bioactive Modifiers have all changed the way we are capable of managing soft tissue deficiencies and have assisted the clinician in improving the healing qualities of these minimally invasive techniques. This lecture will cover site preparation techniques for conventional dentistry as well as prior to and after implant placement.

In this complete surgical video, Dr. David Wong performs an esthetic crown lengthening procedure to address a "gummy smile" as part of comprehensive therapy and smile enhancement. Dr. Wong will outline the indications for crown lengthening surgery as opposed to orthognathic correction. The surgical video will demonstrate the complete crown lengthening surgery, including incision design, flap management and instrumentation. In addition, suturing and post-operative care will also be outlined in detail.

Diagnosis, Planning, & Treatment of Altered Passive Eruption; From a Periodontists Perspective
This presentation will teach how to diagnose cases of altered passive eruption based on the radiographic evaluation (with peri-apical rx and CBCT) and how to plan and document a surgical procedure aimed to ‘uncover’ the beautiful and natural hidden enamel. In a world where esthetics is becoming more and more a concern a simple periodontal plastic surgical procedure can re-establish esthetic and balance to the patients affected by this condition.

Does residual cement around implant-supported restorations cause peri-implant disease? A retrospective case analysis
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between patients with a history of periodontitis and development of cement-related peri-implant disease. Seventy-seven patients with 129 implants for this retrospective analysis were selected from completed implant cases that were scheduled for regular maintenance or had experienced mechanical or biological complications between years 2006 and 2011 in private practice. Implants with extracoronal residual cement and implants without cement remnants were analyzed.

A Periodontal-Restorative Approach to Achieving an Esthetic Outcome in Worn Dentition

A Periodontal-Restorative Approach to Achieving an Esthetic Outcome in Worn Dentition
Esthetic dentistry demands more of clinicians than just simeple knowledge of tooth anatomy and the proper dimensions of teeth. Dentists must also know and understand the proper positions of the teeth in relation to the gingiva, the lips, and entire face. Esthetic measurements are not the only important factors. Other considerations need to include the patient's phonetics and function. A example of a situation where this knowledge and awareness is imperative is in the case of the worn dentition (eg, attrition, abrasion, etc). This article addresses a simple case of how a patients esthetics have been compromised as a result of erosion as well as parafunctional activity (toothbrush abrasion) and how the patient was eventually restored with an interdisciplinary approach between the restorative dentist and the periodontal surgeon.
